Simple Present / Aorist Tense (Geniş Zaman)

The Geniş Zaman is used for general truths, habits, and polite requests. It encompasses the past, present, and future because it describes things that "always" happen.

💡 How to form the Suffix:

  1. If the verb stem ends in a Vowel: Just add -r.

    • Example: Anla (Understand) -> Anlar.

  2. If the stem has 1 Syllable (ends in consonant): Add -Ar (ar/er).

    • Example: Yap (Do) -> Yapar.

  3. If the stem has 2+ Syllables (ends in consonant): Add -Ir (ır/ir/ur/ür).

    • Example: Çalış (Work) -> Çalışır.

The 13 Exceptions:

These single-syllable verbs take the -Ir suffix instead of -Ar: (Take: Alır, Know: Bilir, Find: Bulur, Stop: Durur, Come: Gelir, See: Görür, Stay: Kalır, Be: Olur, Die: Ölür, Think: Sanır, Arrive: Varır, Give: Verir, Hit: Vurur).

Practical Examples:

  • Dünya döner: The world rotates (Scientific truth).

  • Her sabah kahve içerim: I drink coffee every morning (Habit).

  • Yardım eder misiniz? Would you help me? (Polite request).

  • Ahmet yalan söylemez: Ahmet doesn't lie (General characteristic).
